To mark an important milestone towards developing Europe’s first energy islands, over 60 participants form 12 countries gathered at the European Parliament for the launch of the Energy Islands Forum’s (EIF) first roadmap titled “Making Energy Islands a Success.”
The roadmap outlines the critical steps needed to realize offshore energy hubs by 2030 and lays the groundwork for long-term innovation leading up to 2050.
Key takeaways:
- Central to EU priorities
Energy islands are vital to the EU’s goals, contributing to the fight against climate change, enhancing security through energy independence, and boosting European competitiveness. - Importance of timely completion
The panel emphasized the need to complete the first energy islands by 2030 or shortly after. These initial projects will serve as steppingstones for future innovations in energy islands. To achieve this, addressing financial risks and finding ways to finance the necessary grid infrastructure is crucial. - Risks of inaction
While technological challenges and significant investments are expected, the greater danger lies in inaction. Failing to combat climate change and allowing non-European countries to lead in technological advancements will leave Europe dependent on their achievements.
